1. Bates Elementary School
The school is named for former Salem Mayor and U.S. Representative George Joseph Bates and his eldest son, William Henry Bates, who succeeded his father in Congress after the elder Bates was killed in a plane crash. The school was opened in 1970 and was rededicated in 2001 after renovations and an addition were completed. Grades are from Kindergarten - Grade 5.

3. Collins Middle School
Collins Middle School in Salem, Massachusetts contains approximately 675 students in grades 6 through 8. The school is divided into three wharfs (houses) with three grade level clusters in each wharf. Students are scheduled into three large learning blocks a day, two academic and one specialist block. The specialist blocks include art, music, physical education, family and consumer science, and technology education. Other programs include English immersion, world language (French and Spanish), alternative education (off campus), diversion and mainstream (behavior modification) and life skills classes. The Collins school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m.

4. Horace Mann Laboratory School
The school is named for the "Father of Modern Education," a former Secretary of Education in Massachusetts and U.S. representative. It opened in 1896, moved to its current site at Salem State College in 1912 and was dedicated to Horace Mann in 1935. The smaller school size is very much an advantage for the students. The experienced professional faculty has been fully trained in the latest programs in reading and mathematics. The support staff of dedicated paraprofessionals is the best in providing in-class support in many academic areas.

8. Saltonstall School
Saltonstall School is a special place in which to learn. Here, we have multi-age classes. We are with the same teacher for two years. We really get to know our teachers and they really get to know us. In addition, because we are in the same classroom for two years, we help one another learn. Fourth graders help third graders and third graders help fourth graders.

9. Witchcraft Heights Elementary School
Witchcraft Heights Elementary School is a leader in literacy instruction within the district. Our highly trained staff has been recognized for their outstanding work through the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Grant, and for their work in the language, arts program FirstSteps. Literacy efforts include a ninety-minute block with support at all levels from literacy, Title I, ESL and Special Education personnel. We maintain a Title I parent outreach that offers evening programs to parents on the topics of MCAS, literacy, and Everyday Math.

Fish Box Derby

September 7, 2008 in Gloucester. The Fish Box Derby Race is a family event that is held in early September. This was established by a non-profit organization - Fish Box Derby, Inc. whose purpose it is to provide the local youth with the opportunity to build and strengthen family relations. Boys and Girls from ages eight to fourteen are eligible to enter (there are no fees to enter). The young people work side by side with their parents, grandparents, guardians or neighbors to build their own car and participate in the race. The cars reflect each individual style and mechanical abilities.
